Seminar with Federico Caruso and Valentina Predazzi on protecting plant inventions in the era of assisted evolution technologies

On 1 July 2026, SIB LEX partner Federico Caruso and SIB partner Valentina Predazzi, with Giulia Tatangelo and Riccardo Montemurro of SIB, are to hold a seminar on “The protection of plant inventions in the era of assisted evolution technologies” in Florence at the Accademia dei Georgofili, organized by the Academy itself in collaboration with SIB Società Italiana BrevettiUNASA (National Union of Academies for Applied Sciences) and SIGA (Italian Society of Agricultural Genetics).

Assisted evolution techniques, and in particular those based on genome editing, allow plants to be modified in a precise and targeted manner, for example to develop new varieties that are more resistant to climate change and suitable for sustainable and competitive agriculture.

So which are the most suitable regulatory instruments, with regard to these new technologies, that can promote innovation while also ensuring a balanced access to the technologies themselves on the other?
